The things that fling themselves at the Mutewall in the night. 3 meters long, on all fours, black-grey scaled skin, no eyes at the center of the face — only a hollow. Their howl does not come from the mouth; it comes from that hollow.

A line of footprints in the snow, human-shaped, yet with 6 toes. It walked straight from the foot of the wall to behind the tower — not turning aside, not stepping in, and then, all at once, it was gone. An old wall-keeper said: that was not like a beast, it was like a forgotten man.
