The Thing That Walked Out of the Wall
A line of footprints in the snow, human-shaped, yet with 6 toes. It walked straight from the foot of the wall to behind the tower — not turning aside, not stepping in, and then, all at once, it was gone. An old wall-keeper said: that was not like a beast, it was like a forgotten man.
Not everything that comes from beyond the wall howls or flings itself at you. Some things leave only a trace.
After one snowfall, someone found a line of footprints in the snow below Watchtower No. 47. They were human-shaped — yet a man has only 5 toes, and every print in this line had 6. It walked straight from the foot of the wall to behind the tower, taking no detour, stepping into no tower, and halfway along it was suddenly gone. The step before was there; the step after was not.
Among the old wall-keepers there is a saying, passed down from the generation before: some things walk out of the wall, not like a beast, but like a forgotten man. No one knows what it means. And no one is willing, in the night, to think about what it means.
