On the night of the Cold Moon, sixteen-year-old recruit Kael survives his first battle against the Hounds of the Gods at a watchtower on the Mute Wall. He takes seven stitches, watches a fresh crack split a dead king's name in the stone, and finds a faint silver mark cut into his own palm — just as a beacon brings word the old king is dead.

The morning after her father's death, Princess Selene wears a forbidden Mute March braid as a signal, meets a Ravenfeather courier through a secret passage, and quietly diverts a caravan of supplies to the failing Wall. Her old tutor warns her of an Extraordinary Synod, a buried third house, and a maxim about kings the Throne does not know.

A recruit grounded by a calf wound keeps a private ledger of the dead while his sergeant rides south. The old four-fingered veteran who takes the tower asks Kael to write down his name before he has died — and that night the longbow cord is bitten through by something no hound could touch.

The coroner copies three characters from a shard pried out of a dead king. The third he has seen before — on a bronze clasp his father left him twelve years ago, and again on an empty plinth where a vanished house's statues should stand. A Church summons arrives, placing him where seven heirs can see him.

At the synod for a dead king's succession, the Seventh Princess counts how long the Holy Father's gaze lingers on each face, and finds one statue's features gone blank. She and the coroner trade slips of paper bearing a single character — one she cannot read, but has somehow heard before.

At Watchtower No. 47, the surgeon Fenn confirms a bowstring was bitten — not by any hound. The old soldier Soren tells Kael a buried truth about his blood and the surname dissolving off the Mute Wall, while the mark on Kael's palm grows a fourth stroke and a second wave leaves corpses chewed by something else.

Back in the Tomb Undervault, Ion files his report on the dead king and decodes Selene's cipher. Then, in the bronze mirror, the lid of a sandalwood box stirs. Inside, a manuscript he sealed eleven years ago now bears fresh writing in his father's hand — and his father has been dead twelve years.

Selene presses her old tutor Lian Silverhall for the name of the erased Third House. Lian refuses the name but yields a clue and a drawing of a pair of eyes with a faint line beneath the left corner — eyes that match her dead father's portrait, and point toward a guard of a surname that should not exist.

Kael's wound vanishes overnight, a fifth stroke etched into his palm. Sergeant Ming Ravenfeather arrives to examine two corpses bitten by something with human-shaped teeth — bigger than human, stronger than any. Ming warns Kael to hide his hand. In the snow, a six-toed footprint walks to the wall and stops.

A silver-inked black letter sealed with a circle, a triangle and a dot reaches Ion — from House Silverhall, silent for four hundred years. It names him the Third House and points to a hidden door beneath a tomb plinth. Below the gallery, Ion finds a tiny silver seal that resonates with his blood and brands his palm.

Selene seeks out Vesper Dusk, an eighty-year-old retired guard hidden among the palace's forgotten. He is the last of the Third House — surname once Bind, cut in half to Dusk. He recounts how the Throne once called his name, and what it took instead. Then a death-horn sounds from the church.
