The Whitetower Church
The church that holds the oracles, the holy knights, and the faith of the common people, claiming one seat among The Seven Great Houses for itself. It presides over coronations, and it also guards a position growing ever harder to hold: keeping everyone believing the gods are still listening.
The Whitetower Church holds the central seat of power, commanding the oracles, the holy knights, and the faith of all the people. It insists that the seats of The Seven Great Houses must add up to the number 'seven', and it has taken one of those seats for itself. The Whitetower Hall on the south side of the palace does not answer to the Royal Guard; it answers directly to the Church. Before the hall's main gate stand seven divine statues, corresponding to the seven realms and seven houses.
The heaviest power in the Church's hands is succession. Whenever the throne falls vacant, it convenes an Emergency Sacred Council and presides over the coronation. In four hundred years, the Emergency Sacred Council has been held 17 times, of which 14 concerned succession; and of those 14, in 9 cases the outcome was that the Church directly named the new king.
The Church's value is faith and stability. Its greatest difficulty lies in exactly that: it must make everyone believe the gods are still listening — even though among the seven statues in the hall, the face of one has already gone blank.
