House Crowfeather

The wall-keeping house of the Mute Lands, who for generations have guarded the Mutewall on behalf of all the world. Guardianship and sacrifice are their values; being ignored too long by the South is where their other thoughts began.

House Crowfeather has dwelt for generations on the icefields of the Mute Lands, commanding the Wall Garrison and guarding, for all the world, that northernmost wall. Their cloaks are sewn from black feathers, the standard garb of the Garrison; each collar is embroidered with its own name, because so many die upon the wall that a name is one of the few things that can be left behind.

Guardianship and sacrifice have been House Crowfeather's values for four hundred years. But the price is this: the South has all but forgotten they exist. Grain and pay arrive last, there is no seat for them at the council table, and the blood spilled in the Mute Lands does not count on the ledgers of the capital.

Ignored too long, one always grows other thoughts. As the wall begins to crack and the Throne begins to empty, House Crowfeather no longer thinks only of guarding the wall — they begin to ask by what right the Mute Lands must always stand in the coldest, most dangerous, and least remembered place of all.
