Everything in the New Capital is connected to Skyvault's cloud. So someone started using paper — Skyvault cannot read it. A book of paper became the only witness that still remembers.

One late night the light in a window of the building opposite begins to flash — Morse code: DON'T WORRY. NOT ALONE. Skyvault did not translate it for him, as if it had not seen.

In the surveillance picture a person falls from the twelfth floor and is gone after a blink. No alarm, no ambulance. In those 3 seconds of raw surveillance, nothing at all.

A ring with a gap in it. Sometimes drifting in the corner of a public screen, sometimes hidden in a reflection on glass. One blink and it is gone, and it never appears in any record.

When someone sees what they should not have seen, Skyvault issues a category: data contamination. From beginning to end the category describes only the person, leaving no field for the record.
