The Thing That Crawled Out From Under the Ice

Verification passes, the breathing turns urgent, and the ice at the passage's end splits open. A scaled, clawed shape crawls up from a lower layer, stands, and looks at Lika — speaking straight into his mind with a message he did not expect.

???

The back of Lika's upper left arm stayed pressed to the seam for 4.2 seconds.

K aligned with K.

The brain-chip interface flashed:

[Observer active alignment event logged]
[Upper-left-arm tattoo: K] = [wall relief: K]
[Same-origin verification: passed]
[Instance progress: 48.3%]

Lika finished reading those four words, "Same-origin verification: passed."

His past self hadn't only locked K away. He had left a verification mechanism in the Instance too — built solely to wait for Lika's tattoo to come and align with it.

His past self had been waiting for him.

The breathing rhythm changed.

It had been the loop of 1.6 seconds + a 0.3-second pause. Now the pause was gone. One beat every 1.6 seconds. But every beat more urgent than before.

The cadence was still 1.6 seconds. The amplitude was larger than before — every breath a deeper draw of air.

The thing at the end of the passage was moving.

Lika pulled his arm down from the seam. He didn't hurry to drop the sleeve.

He looked toward the end of the passage.

The end of the passage had held only that faint light. Now the light began to warp — expanding outward from a single central point, drawing back, expanding again.

As if something were squeezing into this space through that point.

The brain-chip interface flashed:

[Warning: contact target has entered physicalization phase]
[Origin: end of Layer 1 passage]
[Remaining distance: 23 meters]

"Twenty-three meters." Lika murmured.

Not long after upgrading to Triggerer, he'd tried out the spatial sense — extending his awareness toward that point at the end of the passage.

It read.

This thing's layer was not within the Instance's own layer.

It was coming up through from a lower layer.

That block of ice crystal at the end of the passage — minutes ago Lika had seen it the same as the crystals on either side, a tendril-bundle sealed inside — split open from the center.

The crystal parted from the center — like a curtain drawn aside from within.

A claw reached out from the crystal.

A full thirty-centimeter hand-claw — three digits, each fingertip with a curved hook, the whole surface scaled over. The scales were a deep green shot with blue light, an entirely different color family from the black liquid beneath that cluster of tendrils earlier.

The claw hung in the air for 0.3 seconds. Then it gripped the passage floor.

The floor held — the Instance hadn't pulled the physics layer.

A second claw reached out from the crystal.

Then a body — a head shorter than Lika, but at least twice as broad. The whole body scaled, no clothing, the proportions giving no sense of which part answered to which part of a human. The neck joined at an odd place, as if it could turn a full 360 degrees.

It didn't walk out of the crystal. It crawled out.

Lika stepped back.

After it crawled out the thing straightened its body — it could stand upright.

The instant it stood, it looked at Lika.

Only then did Lika see its eyes.

Two of them. Roughly aligned with where human eyes would be. Each one a green-blue light, flowing endlessly across its surface, no pupil — no eyeball structure.

As the light flowed, a line of text flashed up on Lika's brain-chip interface on its own:

[Non-verbal message received]
[Source: contact target]
[Content: You should not have come here]

Lika faltered for a moment.

That thing's eyes could speak.

It had no mouth. No vocal apparatus. And yet its eyes sent the message straight into the brain-chip.

"You should not have come here." Those words landed in Lika's head with no accent, no intonation — pure string. But Lika knew the message carried emotion.

The emotion was impatience — like someone interrupted in the middle of work.

Lika looked at its eyes.

"I chose to come." he said softly.

The brain-chip interface flashed:

[Non-verbal message sending: waiting...]
[Source: your words → contact target]
[Execution: auto-translate]

Its eyes moved again.

[Non-verbal message received]
[Source: contact target]
[Content: No. You were summoned here]

It took a step.

Every step pressed on the beat of the breathing. It took a step, the Instance ran a beat. Another step, another beat.
