Character profile

Background / motivation / observation stance

Amara

A student of the African ancestral-spirit covenant, tall, dark-skinned, her hair braided into a few thin plaits, wearing small bone earrings. She is silent, dependable, heavy with ritual.

Whenever she enters any place, she first presses her palm down against the ground and bows her head for a few seconds, as if greeting the earth beneath her feet. Every night she drums at the African branch, speaking with the ancestral spirits—one beat, a 3-second pause, then another.

What the Ancestral Covenant Is

The ancestral-spirit covenant is unlike the other four lineages. It has no talismans, no incantations, no astrolabe; what it works with are relationships—who you know, who knows you, who is willing to answer when you speak. So most of her coursework happens outside the classroom, in the sort of places that require being alone and require time.

The drumming carries a long way through the folded campus. Students living nearby grew used to it long ago; some say the sound makes them sleep better.

She does not own much. Most of her suitcase is oil and cloth for maintaining drum skins. The shared spaces at the African branch are cleanest where she has been, though she never asks anyone else to do the same.

She rarely speaks first. But when she is present, the people in her group panic less.

The Interval Between Beats

In class, she reported something that silenced everyone: her nightly drumming had changed from one beat with a 3-second pause to 3 beats with a 1-second pause. The ancestral spirits are speeding up.

They are waiting for something to arrive. She couldn't say clearly what it was—only that something was drawing nearer, day by day.

That Drum

The drum is small, single-headed, its body hollowed from one piece of wood, the hide gone too dark to tell its original colour. The drum is not hers—it is borrowed, to be returned, and a phrase must be spoken when it is.

The drumming is fixed to the night hours. The place is fixed too: the unpaved ground behind the Africa branch, where her feet stand on earth.

She strikes lightly. The sound does not carry far, and carries less after crossing the folded campus. Her own branch hears it; the other branches mostly take it for some noise of the night.

The interval between beats matters more than the beats. She records the intervals, every night.

Greeting the Ground First

Entering anywhere new, she crouches, lays her palm flat to the ground and holds her head down a few seconds. She does it so naturally that classmates first assumed she was tying a lace.

She explained it once, briefly: if you mean to stay somewhere, the place ought to know you have come.

The ancestral covenant has no talismans, no incantations, no star charts. What it handles is relationship, and relationship takes time, so most of her coursework happens outside the classroom. While others are rushing assignments she is often alone, apparently doing nothing.

She speaks little. Getting her to start usually means waiting a while; once she starts she says all of it at once.
