Null Arcana

Five academy gates open respectively onto London's clock tower, a venerable Taipei temple, Cairo's underground passages, an Istanbul archway, Lhasa's stone steps, and a Maya jungle sanctuary. Walk through any of them and you come out on the same campus: this academy sits in no single country, folded instead into the space between all of those places. Students arrive from everywhere, carrying their own civilizations' arcane traditions and their own civilizations' prejudices about everyone else's. What the first week actually teaches is how to survive somewhere every rule contradicts every other rule.

The Academy teaches five great civilizational traditions: Eastern meridian magic, Western sorcery, the Indic mantra-wheel, Middle-Eastern star-sand arts, and African ancestral-spirit contracts. Each has its own cosmology, its own taboos, and its own reasons for looking down on the rest. The work spends considerable space making all five function as systems that genuinely work — their strengths, their costs, and the conditions under which they interfere with one another. That is also the book's greatest pleasure: pose one problem, and five civilizations produce five completely different answers, all of them valid.

Lan Yingchen's trouble surfaces at the new-student placement trial. He cannot be assigned to any single arcane lineage. The testing apparatus reruns itself repeatedly, and what it finally produces is a designation sealed in the Academy archives a very long time ago: Myriad Affinity. The mark makes him someone all five lineages want to recruit, and someone all five lineages feel should not exist.

The series spans nine volumes: Hollow Ring Enrollment / Lost Academy History / Null Arcana Arena / The Primal Arcane Core / Void Door Echoes / Convergence of Five Lineages / Mirror of the Zeroth Seat / Null Arcana Unsealed / The Void Door Opens. Early arcs cover enrollment, placement, and the friction between first-years, pacing closer to academy coming-of-age. The middle moves into the arena and the excavation of school history, escalating conflict from classmates to lineages. The later arcs turn toward why the Academy was founded in the first place.

The core proposition is buried in that placement result: the five great civilizational traditions are not separate from one another, but branches of the same set of permissions that was once altered and redacted. Following that thread, what the work is really asking about is culture itself — when different civilizations develop completely different accounts of the same thing, are those differences each civilization's invention, or the parts each of them failed to copy from one original? The Academy's real work is managing the fragments.
