Background / motivation / observation stance

Aria Winter

Heir to a prestigious Western magical family, around seventeen, with red-brown hair and a deep-green long coat. Her face is cold, like someone raised under strict family discipline. She comes from a house that prizes bloodline and inheritance, and she doesn't buy into the Academy's air of mystery—there's always a layer of scrutiny in her gaze.

She has a family truth of her own to investigate—she didn't come here just to be an obedient new student.

What the Training Left

The Winters prize bloodline and inheritance, and the house rules run to absurd detail: how to sit, which fingers hold the cup, which foot crosses the threshold first, which register of speech is used with which rank. She does all of it correctly—so correctly that you cannot tell whether she likes any of it.

Other new students gasp the first time they pass through a folded gate. She only stopped, looked at the seam of the door frame, and walked on. Her reaction is generally that: confirm the structure first, then decide whether to be impressed.

The deep-green coat never ends up draped over a chair back. Either she is wearing it, or it is back on its hanger.

She looks at people when she asks a question. She does not when she answers one.

My Family Hears It Too

She waited for Lan Yingchen at the classroom door, calling out his full name in accentless Chinese, and asked: Last night, did you dream of a voice? That voice doesn't stop, right? From which direction? Lan Yingchen found the feeling again and answered: Lower left, a fixed direction.

She nodded and let slip something the Academy hadn't made public: the people of my family hear it too. It's been a long time—not just my generation.

The Sheet She Asked About

She stopped Lan Yingchen with a strange request: the page you write about me today—don't write the shadow in the mirror, write what I can hold in my hand.

Because the one who steps out of the mirror isn't her, it's another her; and that 'other her' will also read what he writes. She doesn't want the other one to see.

House Rules

The Winter family's rules run to the absurd: how to sit, which fingers hold a cup, which foot crosses a threshold first, which register of address for which rank. She performs all of it to standard.

To a standard that gives nothing away about whether she likes it. That is part of the point of the training—not showing matters more than being comfortable.

She began at 6, by repetition: a movement done until it is right without thought, and when it is wrong, no beating and no scolding, only again. She can now run through any of it with her mind elsewhere.

The one thing the rules never caught is her gaze. She looks at things too long and too directly. The family corrected it many times. It did not take.

How She Sees the Academy

Other new students gasp the first time they pass through the folded gate. She only stopped, and looked once at the seam of the door frame.

Mystique does not sell to her. Her family has been in this line for many generations and knows that most wonders have a structure; structure has seams; and seams show who made a thing, how, and why it was made that way.

She listens to what the academy says, sets it aside afterwards, and does not adopt it as a premise. What she wants is the version she has checked herself.

She came here with something of her own to look into. She has told nobody. But she has never pretended to have come for an education.
