Submission | Spectra Calls It an Error, But What I See Is the Same Every Time

An anonymous submission that circulates on the darknet and keeps getting deleted. "Spectra files it as error code 513, auto-corrects, and 3 seconds later acts as if nothing happened. But what I see is identical every time — the same carved mark, the same unfinished circle."

If you are reading this, it has not been wiped yet. Be quick.

I do data operations in the Undercity of Saint Tranya, night shift, 22:00 to 06:00. The job is watching the error codes Spectra spits out, filing them, closing them — about 700 a night on average. Most of it is noise: a sensor twitches, a packet drops, a timestamp is off by a few milliseconds. Once your fingers learn it, one entry takes 4 seconds.

But there is one class of error that Spectra brushes off with the same sentence every time: "Ambient noise, auto-corrected." Closed.

The trouble is that it is not noise.

The first time was 03:07 in the small hours, on the monitor feed from Substation No. 12. I was alone in the duty room, the air conditioning humming over my head. On the old stone slab against the west wall there was one more carved mark. I rolled the footage back to look again; the picture skipped a frame and the mark was gone. In Spectra's record, that frame had never existed. But I took a screenshot. I still have it.

I tried not closing one. Reassignment needs a reason, so I wrote "suspected dropped frame, please pull the raw sensor data," submitted it, and watched the pending line for 40 minutes. This came back:

[Error code 513 · Reassignment request]
[Filed by: night shift · data operations]
[Reason: suspected dropped frame, please pull the raw sensor data]
[Ruling: classification correct · reassignment not required]
[Raw sensor data: insufficient permission]

After that it kept happening. A man standing on the platform, picked up by the camera, and the foot-traffic count at that gate for the same moment reads zero. A conversation the recorder caught perfectly clearly, and the speech transcript comes out a blank page. The worst is a man with a tattoo on the back of his neck, the tattoo an unfinished circle — I have seen him on 7 different cameras, and Spectra's face database has no such person.

I asked around. The other one on night shift heard me out, pulled off his headphones and told me: don't touch the 513 class, just press close. I took it to the duty supervisor, who signed off without even opening the footage.

I put all of it into a single file, with the extension every operations worker in this city recognises and none of them will touch. Open the file and the last line is a string I cannot decode, with a symbol I do not recognise hanging off the end, upside down.

I backed the file up 3 times: the offline drive at my station, an old chassis at home, and one copy handed to someone I trust. The next day all 3 had nothing left but the filename, the contents empty. As for the copy I handed over, he says he never even touched it.

I am writing this to ask one thing: if Spectra says something does not exist, and you saw it with your own eyes — is it you that is broken, or is there somebody who does not want that thing written down?

If you also do operations in the Undercity, and you have also closed errors as auto-corrected while knowing they were wrong — back them up. Offline. Not the cloud. They are watching in there.
