The Rift

The Rift is a place that "should be there, and isn't"—a stretch deleted out of the system's worldview.

The first Rift found lies in the Frozen Northern Reach, 12 metres from the centre of Signal Marker S-17-R, and covers roughly the area of a table-tennis table. Snowflakes drifting into that area vanish the instant they meet that layer of air, without melting and without being blown aside. The ground surface isn't there either: the texture an ice field should have, the reflection of starlight, the ridges scoured by wind, none of it is in that patch, and the outline is straight enough to have been drawn with a ruler, looking from a distance like a piece of blacked-out paper stuck to the ice. Instruments can't read it, and even the sensation of a hand reaching in gets taken away.

The ice field beside it is slowly collapsing towards the centre, geographic coordinate drift running at 0.001 metres per second. The whole terrain is shifting towards that absence, too slowly for the eye to catch, but any craft parked nearby keeps recalculating its gravity balance: the CV-1A's maglev compensation threshold is set at 0.4 seconds, and here it was exceeded for the first time.

The boundary itself also refuses measurement. Throw a test ball in and the ball is gone, with no readings returned at all; aim an instrument to sample it and every field comes back blank. What the system marks against this situation is four words: refuses to be measured.

Officially the coordinate is marked a "no-data zone," marked so for 80 years, scanned once every 6 months, with the return always a block of grey pixels. Not until a signal stamped with a timestamp from 85 years earlier drew a man there did Spectra generate a new event classification for it, at 11:01:04 on 1 January, Kaiyuan Year 1010, with a note reading "automatically generated by the system on the basis of observation results 'incompatible with reality.'" Nobody input it, nobody approved it. The word was the Rift.

One line with no beginning and no end remains in the Observer's records:

Withdraw the description of a hole in space. That is an entrance, leading to the stretch of the world's bedrock that was rewritten.

The man who wrote that line later could not remember where he had written it.
