Resonance Event #001
The moment the system first produced the word "Rift" on its own. Location S-17-R, on the morning of New Year's Day, Kaiyuan Year 1010.
Spectra files everything Rift-related under a single classification called a Resonance Event. The first one is the moment the system itself first produced the word "Rift."
The time was 11:01:04 on 1 January, Kaiyuan Year 1010, and the place was Signal Marker S-17-R in the Frozen Northern Reach. In that second the screens of all 360 observation stations at the Central Spectra Monitoring Center went red together and threw up Code Black—Spectra's alert levels run green to red across only 12 tiers, and Code Black isn't among those 12; it is the thirteenth tier, reserved for events "no existing classification can describe," and since being designed it had never once been triggered. In training, the instructor told the monitoring officers one thing: you probably won't see it.
The city moved by itself in the same second. All 7 underground maglev lines went into safe-stop mode, carriages standing still in the tunnels with their lights on, the broadcast cutting to "Please wait. System check in progress."; every commercial airship overhead had its route changed to a rapid descent to the nearest emergency hangar. Nobody issued any of these orders.
What the console sent out across the whole net read like this:
[Net-wide Code Black]
[Event designation: VoidSignal_0]
[Classification confirmed: the Rift]
[Observation point: Frozen Northern Reach Signal Marker S-17-R]
[On-site Observer registered name: NULL]
[Instruction: maintain observation · do not attempt to contact this Observer]The Frozen Continent is a treaty-forbidden zone, no legal route goes in, and there should be no living thing registered on the system there at all. Yet there was a man on site, and the system didn't know who he was—that field could only be filled with NULL.
The man stepped into that blank ground. The moment his foot came down he sank, downloaded into another coordinate system, and dropped out of the view of every instrument. The monitoring officers on the surface saw only the readings collapse. No wreckage, no signal, not even a last coordinate left behind.
Afterwards the archive named the whole procedure a Resonance Event, numbering from #001 with room left after it. On the duty log for that day, a coffee ring was still sitting on the 7-B square—knocked over by a monitoring officer's elbow. He had worked this job 4 years and had knocked it over twice before.
After that night, Spectra's lexicon held one more entry it could not define itself. Nobody knew this was only the first sound.
