Through the cave mouth stand 62 figures, 31 pairs facing one another. At the far end stands another pair, the gate-guard figures, keeping a stone door of 2 tons. Their pupils are carved as a single vertical line.

An invisible line in the gully. Cross it and the dog turns and runs, and a man stops hearing anything from outside the gully. The two sides of the line run on two different sets of rules.

A nameless imperial tomb in the Guanzhong mountains. Aboveground it has left a small village shrine pressing down on a breath-vent, and a stele ground until only the 2 characters 'Emperor's Gate' can still be read.
