The liturgical text on the sarcophagus has a third reading—one set of glyph-roots read as the Hidden Name: the one hidden behind the gate, not to be named, not to be called. The mainstream dismisses it as forced, because one glyph-root does not match.

When an object starts being "more than an object," somebody always comes to deal with it. Someone who says she is with an academy comes in through a door—and behind it is a long corridor that should not exist.

A very few people can "hear" the residual echo of an antiquity—fragments of consciousness left on the object by those who used it, sealed it, or died in front of it. The deeper the listening, the longer the trace stays.

Accession number EA-6957, a Nineteenth-Dynasty sarcophagus on loan from the British Museum. On the bottom of the coffin is a passage of inscription that was never there. After closing, it starts to whisper in a language nobody has spoken for a very long time.

A circle with a gap in it, the gap falling between three and four o'clock. No civilization has it anywhere in its sign systems. The rule the old hands pass on: if you see it start turning on its own, leave at once.
