Background / motivation / observation stance

Roen the Nameless

A descendant of the Eighth Branch of the dynasty, eighteen years old, stripped of his surname and exiled to the North for 11 years now. He is cold and far from naive—he has long known he is merely a piece on someone else's board. He will use people, he will lie, he will deliberately let his opponents underestimate him.

Yet he guards one thing—an old bronze clasp his mother left him on her deathbed, engraved with the two characters 'the Nameless.' His mother once said: this is yours, not your father's. Remember that.

The Northern Recall

The wax seal on that recall order had 3 layers: the bronze wax of House Hourshift, the silver-sand wax of House Whitescribe, and the red-copper blood wax of House Oathbond—jointly certified by the three great houses, an old dynastic precedent that could not be defied. The reason was stated plainly: with the capital's heirs dying one after another, the descendant of the Eighth Branch is, by old precedent, restored to a collateral line as a hostage.

Having read it, only one thing crossed his mind: who wants me dead. The edict that stripped his surname 11 years ago bore the very same set of wax seals.

On the Road to the Capital

On the road to the capital, he heard from a merchant the rumor of heirs dying one after another—the deaths announced and the deaths kept silent, taken together, struck more than one house.

He also gradually noticed that the bronze clasp his mother had left him would 'stir' at certain moments: the closer he drew to the capital, the closer toward that crown, the more restless it became, as if answering something he did not yet understand.

The Graycrown Gate

Under inspection by an officer of House Bloodflame, he entered Graycrown. The gate officer recognized the old serial number of the frontier-army captain who had brought him, and gave him a 7-day temporary pass.

The moment he entered the city, the direction of that crown at the heart of the capital, far off, made the clasp in his sleeve grow hot for 3 to 4 breaths—longer than ever before. He could not name what it was; he only knew this: it was not he who was seeking the capital, but something within the capital that had waited eighteen years for him.

The Rite of Investiture

What the academy granted the Eighth Branch was a blank bronze plate with no inscription. At the Rite of Investiture, he reached out to take that empty tablet—and in the instant his fingertips touched it, the clasp at his chest leapt once, short and sharp, as if someone had tapped it.

At the very same moment, in the northeast corner of the square, a gaze he could not make out suddenly turned intent, withdrawing a little later than everyone else's.

The Early Demonstration

At the early demonstration, Cyrus of House Hourshift, the prodigy of House Hourshift, used his house crest to halt a bronze ball in midair—time frozen for 3 breaths—effortlessly, like a freshman's first lesson.

Yet within those 3 breaths, the sense of direction in the clasp at Roen's chest swung entirely toward that frozen patch of space. He began to be certain: the thing in his blood that should not be there responded not merely to people, but to 'things that lie outside ordinary spacetime.'

Eleven Years in the North

There is little to say about the exile camp. The winter is long, the firewood never enough, two meals a day, and one of them hot counts as good.

He went there at seven and left at eighteen. What he learned in those 11 years mostly concerns staying alive: how to judge whether there is a hollow under a snow layer, how to string a bow before the fingers go stiff, which words are not said in camp.

He does not hate the North. Hatred takes effort, and effort is scarce there.

Nor has he resented the capital. He worked it out early: being thrown out there was not aimed at him; he had never been in anyone's reckoning in the first place. Having worked that out, it went easier.

The Copper Clasp His Mother Left

The clasp is worth nothing. Its face has worn smooth past any pattern, and there is a notch in the rim where something hard once struck it.

His mother put it into his hand before she died without saying where it came from or that he should keep it. He was seven, and what he remembers is that her hand was cold.

He has carried it 11 years. In a place like the exile camp, carrying something you cannot eat and cannot trade is an extravagance. He was searched more than once and hid it every time.

He changed his method three times. The one he settled on is sewn into the lining over the heart—not for safety, but because there he can feel it himself.
