The seven houses are Hourshift, Whitescript, Duskcandle, Starcrown, Mirrorcourt, Vowkey, and Bloodflame. Each holds one bloodline authority, and authority passes only by blood — which makes the kingdom's entire magical capacity, in practice, a closed inventory of family property. Marriage, bastardy, order of succession, certification of lineage: here all of these are magical questions and all of them are political questions. One word entered wrong on a child's registration can strip an entire line of its right to cast.

The surname field on Roen the Nameless is empty. After years in exile he returns to the Black Tower Academy, nominally to complete his enrollment record, actually because some party has placed him back on the board as a piece. What he has to face at the academy is not coursework but something harder: who is willing to share a table with a man who has no surname, who is clearing a path for him while actually clearing one for themselves, and the origin of the blood in his own veins that even he does not yet understand.

The work earns its dark adult classification by refusing to soften consequences. Murder is murder, a marriage alliance is a transaction, and betrayal usually arrives from whoever seemed most reasonable at the time. The academy is not a sanctuary; it is the arena where the seven houses place the next generation in one room to test each other. Magic is not romanticized either — exercising a bloodline authority consumes the caster, and which family members a house is willing to spend is itself a statement of hierarchy.

The saga spans nine volumes: Heir of the Black Tower / The Graycrown Murder / The Tomb Deep Well / War of Seven Houses / The Uncrowned King / Volume VI / Volume VII / Volume VIII / The Null Gate Opens. Early arcs cover survival and alliance-building inside the academy. The middle widens to the murder in Graycrown City and open conflict between houses. The later arcs move into the War of Seven Houses and the final reckoning of the succession war.

The central question is not whether the hero reclaims the throne — it is his discovery that the crown itself is the seal. The reason the seven houses' feudal machinery of bloodline control has held for centuries is that it has simultaneously been holding something far older down; and the Zeroth Authority dormant in Roen's veins is now causing that machinery to fracture. This shifts the goal from "take back what is mine" to a far more troublesome problem: if you dismantle it, what it was holding down comes out.
