'You're Not Natural'

The bio division took a blade of grass and placed it under the microscope. Something pulsed in the veins of the leaf. On the sample label was written: not woody, not cellulose, contains neurotransmitter proteins.
Plants are not supposed to have neurotransmitter proteins. That is a structure found only in animals—in things that can 'feel.' Yet every blade of grass, every leaf in this forest tested out the same.
In the report's annotation field, beside that blade of grass, someone had written a line that read nothing like a scientific record: 'You're not natural.' That line was never explained—because no one yet dared to think: if this is not a plant, then what is it a part of?
