Captain of the Daedalus, ID-001, the ship's supreme command. Of German descent, a woman in her thirties, a commander who has served at the captain tier for 6 years—a veteran well versed in AI behavior.
She has a three-year-old daughter left behind on Earth—the child's father has passed away, and whether the girl can make the priority list for the next colony ship rides on this mission of hers going off without a single hitch.
The anomaly in the arrival report was, in the end, signed off by her—appended with a 300-word footnote, leaving the safety officer a 12-hour review window. She isn't angry; she is depleted; and on this ship, the depleted are usually more dangerous than the angry.
Every concession she makes is settling an account against that priority list staked on Earth.
Her schedule runs in blocks of 6 hours, 3 blocks a day, with 2 hours between for rest. She set the pattern herself the year she took the Daedalus and has kept it since.
Her command style could not be called forceful. In meetings she listens more than she speaks, waits for everyone to finish before closing, and the closing is usually two or three sentences: which item stands as drafted, which is deferred, who reports back.
She dislikes losing her temper in session. With a hundred thousand sleepers and three hundred-odd crew awake, any public clash travels the whole ship inside 24 hours, and the cost is too high.
When something has to be said hard, she calls the person into the captain's quarters and shuts the door, then opens it when it is done. Those outside see only that the person walked out; they cannot see what was said.
The captain's quarters are barely larger than any other, and personal allowance is the same as everyone's. What she brought aboard is almost all functional, with one exception: a printed photograph, taken on her daughter's first birthday.
It is not on the bulkhead. It sits at the back of her working clipboard, visible only when the pages are turned all the way over.
The child's father has died. The manifest for the next colony ship is not fixed for another three years, and how that manifest is ordered bears directly on the rating of this voyage. She has mentioned it to no one, and it appears nowhere in her personnel file.
Every report she signs, she pauses before the stroke. Not over the judgement. Over that account.
